As we get older, our friends, neighbors, and family members may need to stay in a Skilled Nursing Facility. Most commonly, these stays are for Short Term Rehab, to gain strength after a surgery or illness before going back home. Here are some tips from “Caregiver.com” on how to be a good visitor.
- Have patience with the staff. The nursing and care staff have many patients to care for and emergencies do arise. If there is something simple you can do to help the patient while you are visiting, go ahead if you feel comfortable.
- Get to know the care staff. Try to learn their names and write them down in the patient’s room. Their job is very difficult. A simple greeting, thank you, or even bringing in some chocolates could make their day brighter and easier to care for everyone, including your loved one. Communicate with them respectfully if there is a concern or problem.
- Be aware of shift change time. It’s a very busy time where reports are given to the new staff coming on to start their shift. Try to talk with the nurses at less busy times.
- Have patience with the patient. They may be in pain, unhappy about staying there, or could be very bored and lonely. Take them outside or play cards. Bring them treats, flowers, or magazines and books to read. Decorate their room with cheerful items that remind them of home.
