Spring is here! People of all ages are getting out and enjoying the nice weather. But did you know that older adults have a higher risk of falling in the spring time, more than any other season? In the winter months many seniors stay home, drive less, and are less active. Muscles can easily become deconditioned and weak- thus creating the higher risk for falls when spring time comes. Staying active all year long can help. Also, take a look at your home safety. Do some spring organizing to help reduce the risk of falls in the home.
Home Safety Checklist
Look at your entrances and stairways in your home. Are they well lit? Are the railings sturdy? Can you easily see the edges of the steps? Are the steps free from clutter? Are rugs secured to the floor, or can they be removed?
In your living room area: Are all rugs flat and secure? Can they be removed? All cords, furniture, and clutter kept away from walkways? Are light switches easily accessible? Can you get in and out of your furniture easily? Is it time to buy new furniture?
In your Kitchen: Can I reach all items I need without using a stool or reaching over a stove? Is there good lighting? Can I mop up spills easily?
In your bedroom: Can I reach the light easily when getting in/out of bed? Is there a telephone in the bedroom? Are walkways clear from clutter?
In your bathroom: Can I get on and off the toilet easily? Does the shower or tub have non-skid surfaces? Is there a night light in the bathroom? Are towels, shampoo, and soap easy to reach?
