Every fall in Minnesota we get a sea of color in our trees of brilliant golds, oranges, and reds. The sight can be truly breathtaking. But eventually that first leaf falls to the ground, and after awhile your entire yard is covered in fall leaves. For some, the fall raking at home is a quick chore that is relatively easy to manage. But for many Seniors, this is a taxing physical labor that is no longer possible.
Why is Fall Raking important?
If the leaves are left, they can cause a lot of long-term problems. For one, rotting leaves can kill your grass, ruining your lawn. But it can also create an unsafe, slippery lawn for seniors. Unfortunately, if not dealt with in the fall, those leaves will likely still be there when the snow melts, leaving a muddy mess that’s even harder to deal with. Many seniors are left with impossible choices in trying to deal with a yard full of leaves that they are physically unable to take care of.
For some, getting help for things like their fall raking is what makes the difference so that they can continue to live in their homes where they want to stay instead of being forced to move to an assisted living.
How Can You Help?
Our fall raking is a great volunteer opportunity that is great for people of all ages, groups of all sizes, and schedules of all flexibility needs!
You can sign up for fall raking as an individual, or with a group of any size. We often see great teams from families, work places, churches, schools, clubs and more! Additionally, with the Covid concern still on the minds of a lot of people, fall raking can be a great outdoor activity you can do that is social distance friendly!
Unlike many opportunities, this is an incredibly flexible volunteering which can absolutely work with your schedule.
When and Where are these volunteer opportunities available?
Our volunteers head out in Suburban Hennepin County and Minneapolis as well as parts of Wright County. We get out rakes ready to go in mid October and we’ll keep going until snow gets in the way, which is usually in November. We’re always hopeful to help as many seniors as we can.
Ready to sign up? We’d love to have you! Please reach out to our Volunteer Coordinator by emailing scsvolunteer@seniorcommunity.org or give us a call at 952-767-7894.
Thank you for helping us keep seniors where they want to be: Home.
